Heads or Tails
Head SpacesDoreen Dubreuil
Sculpture / Assemblage
This sculpture explores the illusion of choice and the ways power is disguised as chance. The paired heads—Heads and Tails—mirror one another like opposing outcomes of a coin toss, yet both are bound by the same materials, symbols, and constraints. Coins embedded in the surface evoke value, commerce, and history, suggesting how identity is measured, traded, and inherited. The blindfolded face, inscribed language, and dangling chain reference systems that obscure vision while claiming neutrality—economics, politics, tradition—where outcomes appear random but are structured in advance. Red accents mark sites of vulnerability and violence, while the meticulous beading and ornamentation seduce the viewer, echoing how oppressive systems can appear polished, decorative, even desirable. By presenting choice as a binary that leads to the same condition, the work questions freedom, agency, and complicity, asking whether we are ever truly choosing—or merely flipping a coin already weighted.
